Commission approves CDBG application for senior center rehabilitation, $937,004 project

Saline County commissioners voted May 27 to approve a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application to rehabilitate the county’s senior services building and adjacent sidewalks and parking.
Senior services director Rosie Walters told the commission the proposed project seeks funds under the Kansas Department of Commerce’s large community facilities category and would pay for rehabilitation of the senior services building, replacement of the roof, about 5,300 square feet of new parking (about 18 spaces), removal of 3,600 square feet of sidewalk and replacement with 4-inch ADA-compliant sidewalks and ramps, lighting and pole bases, striping, signage and curb work. The estimated total project cost is $937,004.60; Walters said the county would provide roughly $225,000 in matching funds from its capital improvement fund plus foundation grants and donations.
Walters presented the staff recommendation to open the public hearing, receive comment and close the hearing so the grant application could be completed and later returned to the commission for formal adoption of a resolution and signature of grant documents. No members of the public offered comment during the hearing.
After a motion, the commission approved forwarding the application for submission to the Kansas Department of Commerce. The meeting record shows the motion carried with an affirmative vote by the commissioners present.
County staff said there is no immediate budget impact from holding the public hearing; future budget obligations would be reflected if and when the grant is awarded and the commission adopts the associated resolution and contract.
