Participants suggested installing free or event‑mode Wi‑Fi in downtown to help vendors and improve card‑payment reliability and customer experience. Several business owners pressed for upgraded downtown furniture and regular landscaping maintenance; private garden clubs and local florists volunteered to help with planting and upkeep.

Ideas for stronger place identity included decorative gateway signage where highway exits meet the city (staff noted such signs require IDOT permission), synchronized seasonal lighting on building facades and light posts, and improved wayfinding and interstate signage to attract visitors. A participant described the potential for speakers mounted on light posts to provide low‑volume background music during events but cautioned about noise impacts for future downtown residents.

Event logistics conversations focused on minimizing business disruption from street closures and using shuttles from off‑site lots when crowds warrant. The group agreed that a combination of modest capital improvements, clearer communication and volunteer or contractor maintenance could boost downtown aesthetics and event readiness without immediate large capital outlays.

City staff said they are exploring vendors for improved downtown furniture and planters and continuing conversations about hosting Wi‑Fi during larger events. No formal commitments were made at the meeting.
