Staff: low bid for concrete-crushing program comes in $32,000 over budget; council to consider next meeting

Director Harmon explained the city’s periodic concrete-crushing program: the public-works department stockpiles old concrete and periodically solicits bids to crush it into reusable CA-6 aggregate, which staff said is about one-third the cost of buying new material.
This year the low bidder was Sumar and Sumar at $98,000, Harmon said. That figure is approximately $32,000 over what the city had budgeted; Harmon said the overage would be charged across the street, water and sewer budgets (about $10,000 each) and that the city has funds available to cover the full amount. Harmon asked the council if staff should move the item forward to the next meeting for formal action.
Council members raised no objections at the meeting; staff will return the bid award for formal approval on a future agenda when contract documents are in order.
Next steps: staff will place the bid-award resolution on a future consent agenda for council action.
