Glenview honors 2025 'Hometown Heroes' and swears in new village leaders

Glenview on May 6 recognized 10 residents and former residents for military service as the village’s 2025 “Hometown Heroes” and held ceremonial swearing-in for its newly elected leaders.
The program, run in partnership with American Legion Post 166, will place street-pole banners along Glenview Road and recognizes service across branches and eras. President Jenney said the village launched the program last year to honor service members who live or once lived in Glenview and that the banners would be installed "between Waukegan Road and the railroad tracks" and displayed along the Memorial Day parade route.
Commander Steven Girth of American Legion Post 166 congratulated the class and described the post’s role in the partnership: “On behalf of American Legion Post 166, I extend my sincere congratulations to the 2025 Village of Glenview hometown heroes,” he said, and noted the post was offering complimentary one-year memberships to selectees who are not yet members.
The board read short biographies and invited honorees or family members forward. Those recognized included Specialist Louis Deli (Army, deployed to Afghanistan), Chaplain Major Robert J. Bory (Air Force chaplain), Sergeant First Class Alfred Brownlee (Army service including Iraq), Chief Warrant Officer Jack D. Chavez Sr., Master Chief Petty Officer Mike Corman (Navy), Major General James H. Mukayama Jr., Staff Sergeant John Ryan (Marines), First Lieutenant Billy W. Santos (posthumous, World War II), and Lieutenant Albert R. Vallevedo (represented by family while deployed). Several honorees or family members offered brief remarks of thanks. In a recorded message, Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Burke thanked the village, the American Legion and his family "for the recognition" while deployed.
The event included a moment to acknowledge the community ties forged by the former Naval Air Station Glenview and recognized organizations such as the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans for their roles in community support.
After the recognition ceremony, the village administered the oath of office for Michael Jennie as village president and for trustees Gina M. Deboni, Timothy J. Doran and Adam Sidoti. The oath, repeated by each official, included a pledge to support the constitutions of the United States and the state of Illinois and to faithfully discharge the duties of the respective offices.
The village encouraged nominations for future honorees and made nomination forms available at the meeting. The ceremonial actions concluded before the board moved on to routine business and proclamations, including recognition of National Small Business Week for May 2025.
The board recessed after the ceremonial items to proceed with the regular agenda.
