Glenview honors Chief William Fitzpatrick after nearly 55 years in law enforcement

The Glenview Board of Trustees on Oct. 7 read a proclamation and presented a key and retirement badge to Chief William Fitzpatrick, who retired from the Glenview Police Department on Sept. 2, 2025 after nearly 55 years in law enforcement.

President Michael Jennie read a proclamation that traced Fitzpatrick’s career and cited accomplishments including leadership through growth, oversight of a new Glenview Police Station with a 4,000-square-foot training area, an indoor firearms range, underground fleet parking and an 80-person training room, and work to consolidate dispatch to improve operational efficiency.

Senator Laura Fine of the Illinois Senate offered remarks praising Fitzpatrick’s service, saying he “exemplified what it means to be a public servant” and thanking him for his longstanding commitment to the community. Chief Mark Chesla presented Fitzpatrick’s retirement badge and recounted department traditions, including placing a dollar bill in the outgoing chief’s wallet.

Fitzpatrick thanked his wife and the community, reflected on the privilege of service and encouraged incoming leadership to advance the organization. Trustees and community leaders emphasized Fitzpatrick’s role in public-safety programs including the safety response team, school resource officer expansion, bicycle unit and community outreach such as citizens and youth police academies.

The board presented Fitzpatrick with a symbolic "key to the city" and offered formal appreciation for his career and contributions to Glenview’s public safety infrastructure.
