Glenview swears in three Fire Department leaders

The Glenview Board of Trustees on Jan. 6 joined Fire Chief DeRose in swearing in three promoted members of the Glenview Fire Department: Deputy Chief Gary Schumacher, Battalion Chief Tom Gade and Lieutenant Zachary Beatty.

The promotions: Chief DeRose said Gary Schumacher has served more than 22 years in Glenview in roles including firefighter-paramedic, lieutenant and battalion chief, and noted Schumacher’s instructional and technical rescue credentials and a bachelor of science in accounting from Purdue University. Schumacher repeated the oath of office and was congratulated by the board.

Tom Gade was introduced as having more than 26 years of service with more than 16 years in supervisory roles, including assignments overseeing EMS, purchasing and public fire-education programs; DeRose noted Gade’s labor-management experience and state and national fire-service certifications. Gade repeated the oath and was sworn in as battalion chief.

Lieutenant Zachary Beatty, a second-generation firefighter who joined Glenview in January 2011, brings more than 15 years of fire-suppression and EMS experience and prior service at Knollwood Fire Department; Beatty is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and holds an associate degree in applied science in fire service. He repeated the oath and was congratulated by the board.

Board remarks: President Jenny and Chief DeRose praised the officers’ leadership, training and community service and thanked families in attendance for their support.

Next steps: The officers will assume their new duties within the department; the board recessed briefly for photos and congratulatory remarks following the ceremony.
