Glenview residents press board for clearer stance on ICE; trustees point to legal limits and updated resources
Summary
Residents at Glenviews Dec. 2 special meeting urged the board to adopt an ordinance or statement limiting ICE use of village property and to publish know-your-rights materials; President Jenny said immigration enforcement is federal, the village updated website resources, and staff will consider permanent multilingual information.
At a Dec. 2 special meeting, multiple Glenview residents urged the village board to take stronger public steps to address immigration enforcement activity in town, asking officials to adopt an ordinance or at least a formal statement and to post permanent, multilingual "know your rights" guidance on the village website.
Kate Gazda, a Glenview resident, told the board an ordinance would "send a message" to federal agents and residents even if it may be difficult to enforce, and cited neighboring Arlington Heights as an example that includes a reporting provision for any federal use of municipal property. "It sends a message to the federal agents that you're not going to cede control to them," she said.
