On Jan. 20 Brighton City Council unanimously voted to postpone consideration of revisions to the policy that governs council selection of two councilmembers to conduct board and commission interviews, and asked staff to return with updated language.
Mayor Pro Tem Padilla said the current policy is overly restrictive and can impede scheduling when designated interviewers are unavailable. Padilla asked staff to review the policy to allow more flexibility while maintaining safeguards (such as avoiding more than two councilmembers meeting without public notice and maintaining ward diversity over time).
City Attorney Alicia Calderon noted the policy is council‑adopted and that several boards currently conduct their own interviews; Padilla asked staff to include boards the council appoints to but that are not explicitly advisory when drafting the revisions.
Padilla moved to continue Item 11a and to have staff bring back proposed revisions; Councilmember Taddeo seconded and the motion passed 9–0. The existing interview committee will continue until the council adopts any policy changes.
