Four members of the Brighton Youth Commission reported to the City Council on their trip to the National League of Cities conference in Salt Lake City, describing networking, mental‑health breakout sessions and group work on inclusive city design.
"We had meaningful discussions with other youth from across the country," said Eleanor Larson, chair of the Brighton Youth Commission and a senior at Brighton High School. Commissioners Shane Garcia, Amiri and Edna Quesada described learning to collaborate with unfamiliar peers, practicing public speaking and taking part in mental‑health training that addressed stress and overwhelm.
Katrina Asher, the city’s finance director who accompanied the delegation, said the council’s advocacy to National League of Cities helped restore youth participation in adult programming. Council members including Snyder, Tadeo and Worth offered public praise: Snyder called the commission “a fine representation for this city,” and Tadeo said he was “really proud” of the students’ growth.
The presentation required no action; councilmembers thanked the students and encouraged continued participation in civic programs.
