Mayor Sweetland called for nominations for an interim mayor pro tem on Jan. 6. Council member Sheehan nominated Council member Tharpe and described five constituencies a mayor pro tem must serve, stressing experience with constituents, interjurisdictional contacts, staff relationships, council collegiality and a working relationship with the mayor. "I do nominate council member Tharpe for the mayor pro tem position," Sheehan said.
Mayor Sweetland then moved to appoint Council member Tharpe as interim mayor pro tem to serve until a permanent mayor pro tem is appointed in March 2026. The motion was seconded and, because Tharpe was the only nomination, the chair announced her as interim mayor pro tem.
Mayor Sweetland also told the council Centennial qualifies for a Colorado Municipal League (CML) board vacancy for cities in the specified population band and asked council for a thumbs-up endorsement for Mayor Pro Tem Tharpe to apply. Council members responded affirmatively.
The interim appointment is administrative; the council will make a permanent mayor pro tem appointment in March 2026.
