Council approves limited Munwoods deer hunting; commission appoints representative to urban deer task force

Staff reported that, although the Parks & Recreation Commission had recommended denying hunting at Munwoods in September, the City Council approved limited deer hunting in a five‑acre area of Munwoods. Staff said the police department helped develop hunter maps and signage, letters were mailed to roughly 200 nearby residents, and hunting began Nov. 15.
Staff noted early public feedback included a small number of emails with questions and concerns; the police department will track participation and report back. Commissioners asked about how hunters would coordinate with police and whether access and game retrieval would present logistical issues; staff said the police orchestrate deer management and control numbers of permitted hunters.
Separately, the city is assembling an urban deer task force per ordinance and asked the commission to supply a representative. Commissioners nominated and unanimously approved Commissioner Janet to serve as the Parks & Recreation representative; staff will forward contact information to the police chief and the task force is expected to begin meeting in January.
No policy changes were made at the commission meeting that overrode council action; staff will return with further usage and outreach data at a future meeting.
