COPPA reports 330 April complaints, 76 investigations closed; highlights community mediation pilot

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPPA) reported April intake and closure statistics and described a pilot community mediation program at the Chicago Police Board’s May 15 meeting.
Interim Chief Administrator La Kenya White said COPPA received 330 complaints and notifications in April; 88 of those matters were under COPPA jurisdiction. She said roughly 37% of COPPA’s allegations involved Fourth Amendment issues or alleged improper searches and seizures. COPPA closed 76 investigations in April, and White said 20% of those closed cases had at least one sustained allegation.
White also said COPPA issued two video releases in April: one for a fatal officer-involved shooting near 900 East 100th Street and another for an unintentional discharge near 4800 West Monroe. She described a community mediation pilot the office is administering to bridge communication gaps between residents and CPD; COPPA has hosted several community conversations, multiple meetings with district council members and round-table discussions with CPD representatives and plans a final round table with police union representatives next week.
White framed the pilot as an alternative dispute-resolution tool to establish mutual respect and build engagement between community stakeholders and CPD.
