COPPA reports 301 complaints so far in January and recent officer‑involved shooting releases

Ephraim Eady, first deputy chief administrator for the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPPA), gave a monthly update to the Chicago Police Board on Jan. 16, 2025. Eady said COPPA had received 301 complaints and notifications in January so far; 76 of those matters fall within COPPA’s jurisdiction and the remainder were referred to CPD’s Bureau of Internal Affairs.
Eady said COPPA had been notified of two officer‑involved shootings in January and described recent public releases of video and related materials: in December COPPA released materials pertaining to an officer‑involved shooting near 300 West Division Street and one near 6800 North Washtenaw; on Jan. 14 COPPA released materials related to a Nov. 16 officer‑involved shooting near 50 West Polk; and on Jan. 16 COPPA released video and materials related to an off‑duty officer‑involved shooting near 5600 West Leland. He said COPPA responded quickly after notification of a Jan. 3 incident and met with concerned community members within about an hour.
Eady said he and Chief Administrator Andrea Kirsten have presented draft 2025 goals to the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability and will finalize and present those goals publicly. "We thought it was important to hear the concerns and explain the process," Eady said of recent community meetings following incidents. He encouraged the public to check COPPA’s pages on the Police Board website for updates.
