On Jan. 7 the Lake County Public Works and Transportation Committee approved a contract to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Deep Lake Road and Depot Street in Antioch and to appropriate $3,555,000 of county option motor fuel tax funds for the work.
Shane Schneider, county engineer and DOT director, said the county studied the Deep Lake Road corridor from Route 173 north to the Wisconsin state line and determined the preferred alternative included two roundabouts; the Depot Street roundabout is the current project and a second roundabout at North Avenue and Depot is planned for 2027. Schneider said the project includes bike-path construction along the corridor and roadway resurfacing and that the county coordinated closely with Antioch Fire Department and Antioch Community School District to minimize disruptions. The contract includes a 100-day closure planned to begin near the end of the school year so the roadway will be reopened before the next school year.
Committee members said roundabouts will improve safety for motorists and pedestrians near the school and in the corridor. The committee approved the contract by voice vote; the transcript did not record individual roll-call tallies.
Schneider said the corridor work is a multi-year effort: the roundabout and associated work are expected to be completed this year, and remaining corridor improvements and the second roundabout are planned for 2027.
