Residents oppose proposed pipeline routing and accuse sheriff of cutting jail programs during Lake County public comment

Two speakers used the board's public-comment period Dec. 9 to press separate concerns to Lake County officials.

Rolf Wagner, a resident of Antioch, said a proposed Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America project would place a 24-inch underground pipeline through properties on North Crawford Road, Edwards Road and North Sheridan Oaks Drive and that the company intends to file a FERC permit application in early 2026. Wagner said neighborhood residents had received door knocks and "veiled threats of property condemnation" from land agents and that elderly neighbors were being pressured to sign legal paperwork. "We have been organizing a neighborhood resistance to the routing of this project," Wagner said.

Margaret Carrasco told the board the county sheriff and the county's homeland-security director declined an invitation to a community meeting but later offered a private meeting. She alleged that since the sheriff took office, educational and reentry programs for jail inmates (GED and similar services) have been cut "about $1,000,000 each year," questioned how county credit cards and travel have been used, and said she will file an ethics complaint and request an investigation. Carrasco said she left a meeting when the sheriff ordered her to remove material from her Facebook page about ICE agents.

The county's public-comment rules, read earlier in the meeting, state that matters raised may be referred to the appropriate standing committee for follow-up. The board did not take formal action on either public comment during the session.
