Summary
The committee approved an ordinance amending voting-site assignments for 36 of 431 precincts after a late change; the clerk's office will return Exhibit A updated to replace a closed private venue with Saint Mark's Church and the office said it will publicize that voters may cast ballots at any polling place in their community.
The Lake County Board Financial and Administrative Committee approved an amendment to an ordinance that updates assigned voting sites for 36 of the county's 431 precincts.
Cynthia Prime Heran, chief deputy in the county clerk's office, said staff initially proposed changes for 40 precincts but a late change reduced that number to 36. The clerk's office asked the committee to amend Exhibit A to strike precincts 305–308 and remove a private event location identified as Encore Events (replaced by Be Cool Events in an earlier draft) because the private venue closed; the clerk's office said Saint Mark's Church — which previously had been used — reversed its earlier decision and will serve as the polling site.
"Some schools are choosing not to be polling sites because of access and security concerns," Prime Heran said, describing the office's site-survey process, which checks space, ADA accessibility, parking and electrical capacity before confirming any location.
Several members urged staff to prioritize municipal buildings and park district facilities when feasible because those sites are familiar to voters and usually offer parking and accessibility. Member Altenberg emphasized voter convenience: "We are going to be publicizing that heavily. You don't have to go to the same voting place — you can go to another voting site in your community," she said, as the clerk's office reiterated the county will publicize alternatives for voters whose polling places change.
The committee approved the amendment and then approved item 8.36 as amended by voice vote.
