She warned that “social isolation…has the same effect as smoking 15 cigarettes a day,” urging continued local support for programming that connects isolated seniors.
Hubbard also described a limited federal Medicare D outreach grant—about $2,000 per year—that helps clients but does not adequately cover staff time for administering benefits and outreach. Committee members asked about transportation partnerships; Hubbard said clients use local transit options and that the center coordinates drop-offs for events.
Following the presentation, a committee member moved to forward a $15,000 request to the full board; the motion carried. The committee’s approval was procedural: members directed staff to include the request on the full board agenda for a final funding decision.
The committee did not set a final funding source at this meeting; the request will be considered by the full board at its next scheduled session.
