State coordinator urges Westborough to plug into Massachusetts250 programs, grants and reenactments

She encouraged the committee to add local historical sites — she noted she could not find Westborough’s Sibley House on the state site — and to submit events and photos for broader exposure.
On funding, Sheila said America250 has awarded $3,500,000 to 96 organizations statewide but that no further grant funding was currently available. She presented a range of no-cost or low-cost programs the committee could adopt, including the fifth-grade essay contest, National History Day for middle and high school students, America's Field Trip for school winners, and a classroom flag project in which 6-by-6 fabric tiles are assembled into a large flag for display in November 2026.
Sheila highlighted major statewide events that provide partnership opportunities: a Henry Knox/Artillery Trail reenactment beginning in January (with gateway stops she cited in Worcester and Framingham), a Smithsonian 'Museum on Main Street' exhibit touring rural communities, and tall-ship visits and FIFA World Cup–related activity in Boston in 2026. She suggested local outreach — from coordinating street closures with police and fire to engaging restaurants and hotels — to capitalize on visiting crowds when routes pass nearby.
Sheila also noted related statewide initiatives such as the Massachusetts Veterans Legacy Trail (cataloging roughly 1,300 veterans' monuments) and a Massachusetts250 license plate program that has sold tens of thousands of plates. She urged Westborough to leverage these existing programs rather than starting duplicate festivals, and she offered to be a resource for planning and promotion.
Committee members responded with practical questions about selection criteria for reenactment towns, school participation in contests and whether merchandise sales could be used locally; Sheila offered contact points for more detailed logistical questions and encouraged follow-up coordination with state partners.
