EDC votes to advise select board to retain single tax rate
Summary
At the Dec. 2 meeting the EDC voted to ask the select board to keep Westborough's long-standing single tax rate rather than adopt a split (residential/commercial) rate, with members citing small-business competitiveness and fiscal stability.

Members of the Economic Development Committee discussed the select board's annual tax classification hearing and whether Westborough should maintain a single tax rate or move to a split rate that differentiates business and residential property tax rates.
Committee members, including representatives of the local chamber and business community, argued that retaining a single tax rate supports business competitiveness with neighboring towns, encourages property owners to invest in local commercial space, and helps preserve sponsorships and contributions from businesses that benefit the broader community. Several members noted that property owners, not necessarily tenant businesses, receive the tax bill and that a split rate can lead to unintended consequences for small businesses that lease space.
The committee moved and seconded a recommendation that Shelby present the EDC's view (advocating for a single tax rate) to the select board. The motion passed by roll-call; the committee will forward that position as input to the select board's tax-classification process.
