EDC names award nominees and winners; Big Y wins large-business nomination 7-3

The Economic Development Committee met Dec. 2 and reviewed the slate of nominees for its annual business and community awards before taking a series of motions and votes.
Karen and Dave presented nominees across categories including small business, new downtown business, large business, sustainable business, civic pride and hall of fame. Committee members discussed whether to open select categories (Hall of Fame and Civic Pride) to online public voting and asked for clearer criteria and descriptions of award categories to be posted on the EDC website for transparency.
The committee moved and approved the Westborough Rotary Club for the Civic Pride award and Pickering & Son Funeral Home for Hall of Fame recognition; members cited long-term community contributions in support. Mass Restoration was approved for Best Expansion. After discussion, Bridal 33 was chosen as the New Downtown Business nominee and CraftLab was approved for the Small Business award.
The large-business nomination drew particular discussion about comparative community impact; after debate the committee voted to nominate Big Y over The Willows, with a reported tally of 7 in favor and 3 opposed. The sustainable business category was deferred for further input from Sustainable Westborough before final selection.
Logistics for the awards event were set: the ceremony is provisionally scheduled for Jan. 30; committee members will gather sponsor lists and confirm catering and trophies. Budget notes from prior years put expenses for this event in the low thousands (a 2024 review showed expenses of about $3,641). Laura will circulate sponsor lists and Karen Henderson will proceed with preparations once nominees are finalized.
