Baldwin City approved a contract with the Kansas League of Municipalities to run the search for a new city administrator after a presentation from John Deardof, the League’s LEAPS search representative.
Deardof said the search begins with a short survey of the council and optional community input to build a candidate profile, then moves to advertisement, resume collection and a review process that produces a book of finalists for council interviews. “Typically I’d estimate 60 to 90 days depending on how long you want the ad to run,” Deardof said. He described follow‑up work the League handles, including background checks and initial candidate contacts.
Council discussion focused on whether the proposal provided enough information for tonight’s vote and on how the process could be tailored to local preferences. One council member said the hiring committee recommended approving the League’s proposal; the motion to hire the League was moved and seconded and passed.
Next steps outlined in the presentation include a council survey to build the candidate profile and a League point of contact to coordinate logistics and interview scheduling. Deardof said the League would keep the mayor and staff apprised of applications and the timeline.
