The Baldwin City Council held two ceremonial items at the start of its meeting: the swearing-in of new police officer Liam Murphy and a proclamation honoring the Baldwin High School girls 4x800 relay team for winning the 4A state championship.
A city staff member introduced Murphy as an Army veteran who later worked at the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and who lives in Baldwin City with his family. Murphy’s family came forward as he took the oath; he recited the pledge to support the U.S. and Kansas constitutions and to "faithfully discharge the duties of a police officer of the city of Baldwin City." Amra administered the oath. "So help me God," Murphy concluded during the oath.
The council also read a proclamation recognizing the girls’ 4x800 team and proclaimed Tuesday, July 1, 2025 as a recognition day for the athletes; coaches and student-athletes came forward for a photo. Council members congratulated the team and community members applauded.
