Westborough planning department schedules downtown zoning public hearing; billboards and multifamily projects on agenda

The Town of Westborough planning department briefed the Economic Development Committee on multiple upcoming land‑use items and new applications.
Jenny Gingriss, the town's planning director, said the department continues work on downtown zoning revisions and expects to take those updates to the planning board and then the March town meeting. She said the planning board will hold a public hearing on Feb. 3 to gather comment on the proposed downtown zoning changes.
Gingriss also reported two continuances on previously introduced multifamily projects (on Turnpike/Route 9 and Milk Street) and a subdivision application for 50 Flanders Road. Two new applications are expected in February: a nonprofit operation at 5 Technology Drive and a fitness center for Westborough Swim and Tennis on Oak Street. "We're working on the zoning still for downtown, so that should come back to the March town meeting," Gingriss said.
The planning director added that a company will present a proposal to change zoning to allow a billboard on Interstate 495. That billboard zoning proposal will be reviewed by the planning board at an upcoming meeting.
Fred Lenaro provided community development updates, reporting that Hyundai has started construction on Route 9 and that Jim Ball's building on Route 220 has begun construction activity.
Next steps: staff will circulate the downtown zoning materials and public‑hearing details; committee members offered to help distribute a downtown parking survey to local businesses to gather input for the zoning review.
