School committee backs applying for $150,000 CPC grant to help replace Hastings playground

The Westborough School Committee authorized staff to submit a Community Preservation Committee (CPC) grant application requesting $150,000 toward replacement of the Hastings playground equipment.
Superintendent Allison told the committee the district’s submission advanced to the next CPC review stage and that the full replacement cost is estimated to be in the $700,000–$800,000 range. She said the CPC application is due Dec. 31, and that project approval also requires CPC recommendation and a town‑meeting vote. She asked the committee to consider drafting a letter of support; the district will share a draft letter for committee review before it is finalized.
Allison said the playground is used both for school recess and community recreation, and that the requested $150,000 is intended to cover part of the replacement cost rather than the full sum. “We asked for sort of a portion that we thought was a decent grant size,” she said. The committee discussed contingency plans if town capital approval is not secured later; staff said the CPC award process and any town capital request would be coordinated so the project fits into long‑term capital planning.
Committee member Steve moved that the committee approve moving forward with the application and accept funds if awarded, contingent on committee review of the application materials and the draft letter of support; the motion passed by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will share the application materials and a draft support letter for committee review before final submission and before accepting any award.
