Council awards chip-and-seal contract to Bettis Asphalt, approves golf-course alternates

Russ reported the company was the low base bidder at what he described in the meeting as "130,000 even and $60.64 cents," covering work on 10th Street (Ames to High) and 9th Street (Ames to Dearborn), and surrounding cross streets.
Russ also identified two alternates included in the bid packet: a golf course parking-lot overlay for $6,648 and a golf-course driveway for $4,977.28. He said prep work to repair potholes and make the area suitable for chip-and-seal would cost roughly $2,500. Including alternates and prep, staff reported a combined cost of $144,125.92, which falls within the city’s $150,000 street-maintenance budget for the year.
Councilmembers discussed whether adding the golf-course alternates would divert staff time from other roadwork and whether the project would help long-standing problem blocks. City staff said the area covered is among the worst road conditions and recommended proceeding to keep the roads from deteriorating further. Unidentified Speaker (S6) moved to approve the award to Bettis and include alternates 1 and 2 (entrance and parking area); the motion was seconded and passed.
Next steps: staff will finalize the contract with Bettis Asphalt and schedule the work for summer, subject to contractor availability.
