Will, who identified himself as the owner of Café Karma and the applicant, told the board the building is roughly 20 years old and that the two metal boxes that hold the marquee sign are corroded. “The 2 boxes that hold the signs are rusty and during high winds, they start shaking violently and I think eventually they're just going to fly off,” he said.
Will described two components to the application: rebuilding the sign box to address rust and safety, and removing a roadside garbage enclosure that blocks dumpster trucks, replacing it with a sliding gate and relocating the dumpster to allow trucks to pull in without driving over neighboring property. He told the board city staff would not place a no-parking zone and that moving the enclosure was the practical alternative.
A procedural note was recorded in the meeting: Kathy Cunningham advised that the applicant should abstain and leave the room for the board’s vote; meeting minutes show the applicant stepped out for the vote. A board member moved to fund $8,177.61 to Humanity Hospitality LLC and another board member seconded; the motion carried on a voice vote.
