South Padre board approves facade grant support for Sea Ranch Marina art garden

The South Padre Island board voted to support a facade improvement grant for a new art garden and makerspace at the Sea Ranch Marina Barn, approving a motion to provide the fence component of the grant by voice vote.

The grant request followed a presentation from Jim Inholm, manager of Sea Ranch Marina, and local artist Jenna Pena, who described plans to convert an underused 3,400-square-foot barn at the marina into an arts destination with gallery and programming space. Pena said the group intends bilingual classes, family programs, seasonal events, gallery exhibitions and a sculpture garden at the site.

“ We are looking to make an inclusive studio and makerspace,” Jenna Pena said, describing plans for classes, creative listening sessions and modular furniture to support music and community events. Inholm introduced the proposal and said the project had exceeded the marina’s expectations so far.

Board members and presenters said the exterior changes would include replacing metal cladding with coastal-style siding, lighting upgrades, backlit or artistic signage and measures to prevent water intrusion at windows. Pena told the board there are currently “a little over 15 active artists” who would use the space and that studio memberships are charged at $100 per month.

Pena also said the full project budget—“the $60,000 when all finalized,” in her words—was not yet final. The board’s approved action at the meeting was narrowly limited to providing a fence as part of the facade improvement work; the motion did not specify a dollar amount for the board portion of the grant.

Members and attendees said the location should attract visitors because of the site’s proximity to Isla Blanca Park and other marina foot traffic. Presenters said the facility is intended to expand local opportunities for artists and to increase visitor engagement.

The motion on the facade grant was made and seconded by unnamed board members; the record shows the item passed on a voice vote. No formal roll-call tally was recorded in the meeting minutes.

The project proponents indicated they may pursue additional funding streams (including a Sand Dollars grant for storage solutions) and that the barn space is being operated under a lease arrangement with Sea Ranch Marina. Presenters said some portions of the larger Sea Ranch facility total up to about 9,000 square feet, with the barn footprint at roughly 3,400 square feet.
