Parks director outlines pool repairs, equipment upgrades and Cody Park priorities

Parks and recreation staff — Parks Director Steve Grant and Deputy Director Brian Bailey — presented a multi-year set of projects for recreation facilities funded from the recreation fund.

Key items include a two-phase indoor pool restoration at the community center (electrical and masonry work in the first phase, mechanical and pump-room work in the second phase), resurfacing and repainting of pool decks and the slide system, a continuing five-year equipment-replacement plan for the fitness area and replacement of banquet chairs and tables in the community center. Staff said pool ceilings and associated paint have not been addressed since 1988 and that humidity damage created staining that needs repair.

Cody Park and sports-field priorities include shade structures, a fence on the south end of a court to prevent balls from escaping and a proposed future lighting upgrade for the Cody Park basketball courts; the lighting project is currently scheduled later in the five-year plan, and commissioners discussed whether to accelerate it. Staff noted that parks’ smaller “on-the-ground” storm or paving fixes are often scheduled annually and can be re-prioritized.

Why it matters: Recreation facilities serve broad community needs and the requests include public-safety and accessibility upgrades (pool lifts, ADA features) along with routine lifecycle replacements for equipment and furniture.

Next steps: Staff said some items are scheduled for 2026; others remain unscheduled and would be brought forward in budget sessions for priority decisions and possible rescheduling.
