Highway division begins milling and paving season; state denies temporary signal request at 104th and K

Kenosha County’s highway division reported early-season work including paving, milling and mowing, staffing updates and a rejected request to reinstall a temporary traffic signal at 104th Avenue and County K.

Why it matters: the highway division said routine pavement, ditch mowing and an initial paving contract on County Highway D are underway. The state, not the county, makes determinations on temporary signals for state-maintained corridors; the state rejected a request to reinstate a temporary signal at 104th and County K, meaning the intersection will remain a four-way stop until longer-term work is scheduled.

Director Boldt for the highway division reported six approved Adopt-a-Highway applications and multiple new hires in mechanics and patrol candidates undergoing pre-employment screening. He said crews started a paving project on County Highway D from Highway 50 north to County Trunk J B and that state-required ditch mowing must be completed before July 4.

On the temporary signal request for 104th and County K, Boldt said the state denied reinstatement of a temporary signal that had been used as part of a prior reconstruction detour; the state will not place a temporary signal at that location. Boldt said a permanent traffic signal would be considered only as part of future full corridor reconstruction work.

Ending: Supervisors thanked highway staff for updates; staff said they will continue to coordinate detours and provide public notifications when work such as bridge closures or short-term railroad maintenance is scheduled.
