Sunset Council adopts ordinance to add bundled recycling program to city code

The Sunset City Council voted unanimously on Jan. 7 to adopt Ordinance 2025-01, amending Chapter 3 of the city code to add a bundled recycling program that will take effect July 1, 2025, or once recycling cans have been delivered to all residents.

Councilmember Smalling opened the public hearing announcing the purpose: “The reason for the public hearing tonight is to solicit input from any Sunset City resident on adopting amendments made to chapter 3, collection of solid waste, green waste, and recyclable materials, to include a new bundled recycling program to the Sunset City code.” No members of the public spoke during the hearing.

The council then considered the ordinance during the regular session. Councilmember Wrigley moved to put the ordinance to a vote; Councilmember Carlson seconded. During the roll call vote, Councilmember Wrigley, Councilmember Smalley, and Councilmember Carlson voted yes. The mayor announced the measure was approved unanimously of those voting.

The ordinance adds a bundled recycling program to the city’s solid-waste provisions and sets an effective date of July 1, 2025, with a contingency that the program take effect earlier if recycling cans are delivered to all residents before that date. City staff thanked council members and office staff for their work preparing the ordinance.

Implementation details discussed during the meeting included the delivery of recycling cans to residents as the trigger for the program’s start; the council did not specify fees or vendor contract details during the session. A public hearing produced no public comments.

Next steps: the ordinance is adopted and scheduled to become effective on July 1, 2025, or upon full citywide delivery of recycling cans, whichever occurs first.
