Sunset City Council adopts ordinance to add bundled recycling program

Sunset City Council on Jan. 7, 2025, adopted Ordinance 2025-01 to amend Chapter 3 of the city code to add a bundled recycling program, effective July 1, 2025, or once the city’s recycling cans have been delivered to all residents.

The ordinance change was the subject of a public hearing; no members of the public spoke. Mayor and council then moved the ordinance to a vote. Councilmember Wrigley moved to put the ordinance to a roll-call vote; Councilmember Carlson seconded. In the roll call, Councilmember Wrigley voted yes, Councilmember Smalley voted yes and Councilmember Carlson voted yes; the mayor stated the measure was approved by a unanimous vote. Councilmembers Barling and Thompson were excused earlier in the meeting.

The ordinance adds a bundled recycling program to the city’s solid-waste, green-waste and recyclable-materials code. The ordinance text specifies an effective date of July 1, 2025, or upon delivery of recycling cans to all residents — whichever occurs later. City staff thanked council members and office staff during the vote for work on the ordinance.

No public comments were recorded during the hearing. The city will implement the program once the hardware (recycling cans) is distributed to households; the ordinance does not specify the vendor, per the public record presented at the meeting.
