Commission adopts replacement competency exams for educator licensure

The Nevada Commission on Professional Standards voted to adopt a set of replacement competency exams for educator licensure during its meeting. The commission approved the measure by voice vote after a short presentation from Department of Education staff.

The Department of Education recommended adopting updated or replacement exams developed through Educational Testing Service's multistate review cycle. The list presented included replacements or updates for family and consumer sciences, secondary social studies, middle school social studies, paraeducator assessments (split into separate reading/writing and math subtests) and a replacement of "education of young children" with an "early childhood education foundational knowledge and content" exam. Jeff Briskie, director of educator licensure, development and family engagement, told the commission the department recommends adopting the replacement titles.

The commission briefly discussed implementation timelines. Briskie said the department typically provides a one-year overlap so candidates who registered for an older test may complete it within that period; new candidates may begin on the new exams immediately. No amendments were offered during the discussion.

Votes at a glance: The motion to adopt the competency exams was moved by Commissioner Joseph Morgan and seconded by Commissioner Belknap. The commission voted by voice; the minutes record unanimous approval: "Aye" from members present. The commission also approved the February 19 meeting minutes earlier in the session; that motion was made by President Rosar and seconded by Commissioner Hawkins and recorded as approved by voice vote.

The department said it will present the full implementation schedule and guidance to educator preparation programs and candidates as needed.
