Council authorizes citywide ethics and harassment training, outside counsel for investigations

The City Council on Feb. 4 authorized a package of training and outside legal support to clarify elected officials’ supervisory responsibilities and campaign‑related restrictions and to require comprehensive ethics and harassment training for council members, their legislative aides and city employees assigned to council offices.
What happened: In an executive session the council directed staff to bring forward training and, when an allegation involves elected officials, to use outside legal counsel for conflict‑neutral investigation. After returning to open session council adopted a motion authorizing city staff to implement supervisor training for council members, citywide ethics and harassment prevention trainings and for the city attorney to engage outside counsel where appropriate. The motion passed unanimously.
