Coffey County commissioners voted to grant a 3% cost-of-living increase to all county employees, both hourly and salaried, and to make the raise effective for the payroll period that began Dec. 16.
Commissioners discussed whether to use a flat-dollar raise or a percentage; several commissioners said alternating methods across years helps balance equity concerns for lower-paid staff and department heads. County staff presented a Midwest regional study figure of roughly 3% as a benchmark. After discussion the commission approved a motion to give a 3% increase across the board and keep commissioners' salaries unchanged. The motion passed by voice vote; a follow-up motion set the effective date for the increase to apply retroactively to the payroll period beginning Dec. 16. The motions were moved and seconded (first motion: moved by McCurdy, seconded by Huguenen; effective-date motion: moved and seconded on the floor) and carried by voice vote.
County staff will implement the change in payroll processing and confirmed the increase will be reflected in the next pay cycle; the county also noted that hourly employees who are eligible for step increases in April will receive those step increases as usual.
