Commission approves courtroom construction contracts for secure courtroom build‑out

County staff presented three construction contracts to build out a secure courtroom in existing county space above the commission chambers and the commission authorized the chair to sign the contracts.
Mr. Wilson and staff said the work will convert the current IT location to courtroom space. The contracts reported to the commission were: Gaffstrom Construction (general contractor) for $789,500; Robert Gibbons (mechanical contractor) for $185,500; and Sun Electric (electrical contractor) for $160,000. Staff said the contracts were procured through a bidding process coordinated by the project architect (FOSS Architecture) and that the bidders were reviewed and verified as the lowest qualified bidders.
Some commissioners asked if adding courtroom capacity would reduce hearing wait times; staff said that question could be part of a separate discussion about court space planning. Commissioner Breitling noted he did not believe there was a current need for another courtroom but the majority of commissioners voted to approve the contracts.
A roll call approved the contracts and authorized the chair to sign; staff said construction activity could begin the week of Feb. 10 and that IT had already begun moving in anticipation of the project.
