Coffey County commissioners approve routine administrative measures, hires and equipment purchases

Why it matters: These routine votes adjust county finances, allocate capital and personnel resources and advance planned road-maintenance purchases that county staff said support ongoing repairs and seasonal programs.
The board first approved the minutes from the Jan. 27 meeting and then authorized “the chairman to sign 1 tax abatement in the amount of $662.52,” a motion introduced by a commissioner who said the property had been sold by the city of Burlington in April 2024 and its classification changed, prompting the abatement.
Commissioners then moved to authorize payment to cover district court office equipment from the 2024 year-end transfers and the equipment reserve fund; staff described the transfer as moving leftover general-fund dollars to a department-specific equipment reserve so the district court can spend later, after remodeling of the law-enforcement center.
The board approved the 2025 salary chart reflecting a 3% cost-of-living increase, following a motion and second and a voice vote of “aye.”
Personnel action: The board authorized the county payroll notice for a new jail corrections hire, Tremaine Boyle, classification Corrections 2, wage $20.11, effective Jan. 27, 2025.

The board also voted to enter a 15-minute executive session to discuss non-elected personnel and medical matters under the Kansas Open Meetings statute language cited in the motion.
Ending: Commissioners said the routine votes free staff to proceed with scheduled work and follow-up tasks; several of the items (equipment purchases and the district court transfers) were presented by department supervisors who answered commissioner questions before the motions passed.
