RIDE 2024 accountability results: Melville earns 5 stars; three district schools rated 4 stars

Portsmouth school and district leaders reviewed the Rhode Island Department of Education’s (RIDE) 2024 accountability results at the Jan. 14 Portsmouth School Committee meeting.
Dr. Viveiros presented the state methodology and the district’s results, saying RIDE uses three measures — academic performance, student success and college-and-career readiness — to produce an overall star rating. The state assigns a school the rating of its lowest measure under the rules; a school with one low measure cannot have a higher overall rating than that measure allows.
Portsmouth’s results, as presented to the committee:
- Melville Elementary: 5‑star overall (top scores in school quality/student success and achievement/growth). - Hathaway Elementary: overall 4 stars (5 stars in school quality/student success; 4 stars in achievement and growth; one point short of 5 in achievement and growth). - Portsmouth Middle School (PMS): overall 4 stars (5 stars in school quality/student success; 4 in achievement and growth). - Portsmouth High School (PHS): overall 4 stars (three 5‑star measures and one 4‑star measure; the one lower measure determines the overall rating under RIDE rules).
Committee members praised staff and principals for the work that produced the results. Mr. Ferber asked why a school with three 5‑star measures and one 4‑star measure is capped at 4 stars; Dr. Viveiros and others explained that the rating system is rules‑based and uses the lowest rated measure to determine the overall star level.
Why it matters: The RIDE star ratings affect public perception, inform district improvement planning and are tied to state accountability monitoring. Committee members noted the district’s progress since 2019 and celebrated Melville’s 5‑star designation.
What the district will do next: The superintendent said Melville will be recognized at a future meeting and principals will continue to review sub‑measures where the district is close to higher ratings, especially achievement and growth measures.
