Public speakers press council to pursue 80th/88th–Zuni connection to improve emergency response

Several residents urged Westminster City Council on Feb. 24 to pursue a street connection tying 80th (Eighth Avenue) to Zuni Street to improve emergency access and shorten fire and EMS response times. Councilors and staff said they are evaluating the idea and coordinating with neighboring jurisdictions.
Jim Fenimore described on-the-ground concerns and said he continued to press for the connection. “This 88 to Zuni is a safety for the community for fire response and emergency response,” Fenimore told the council.
Former firefighter and resident Art Dubuque also urged the council to work with Federal Heights and Adams County on the tie-in to improve response times for police, fire and EMS.
Councilors responded that staff has been working with the residents who first raised the issue and that it involves coordination with neighboring communities. City Manager Jody Andrews said staff is taking “a very strong and hard look at that, and what that might look like to move forward,” and acknowledged the public‑safety rationale presented by speakers.
No formal action was taken at the meeting, but councilors asked staff to continue pursuing the concept and report back on feasibility and interjurisdictional coordination.
