County seeks $161,187.60 Edward Byrne JAG grant to replace half its TASER inventory
Summary
Montezuma County staff requested permission to apply for an Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant of $161,187.60 to replace the remaining half of the county’s TASER (Axon) devices; staff cautioned about reimbursement timing from last year’s award and recommended applying while postponing purchases until reimbursements are confirmed.

Montezuma County staff sought commissioner approval on Feb. 24 to apply for a federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant in the amount of $161,187.60 to replace the remaining half of the county’s TASER devices.
Mr. Talley presented the request and asked commissioners to approve applying for the grant. County staff confirmed this amount is similar to, though not exactly the same as, the prior year’s award that covered the first half of TASER replacements. Staff said the county has not yet received reimbursement for last year’s grant and has not yet paid Axon for that equipment.
Staff recommended proceeding with the application but urged caution about committing county funds before prior-reimbursement is received. Robert (county staff) suggested the county could apply and, if awarded later this summer, manage vendor orders in phases or delay ordering to reduce exposure if reimbursement remains unresolved. Commissioners were told awarded purchases would not likely be ordered until October at the earliest, giving time to assess reimbursement status.
Staff said returned older devices are sent back to Axon as trade-ins and that the new bundle includes a five-year warranty with replacement cartridges for training and use covered during the warranty period. Staff estimated approximately 10 TASER deployments per year countywide and noted training cartridge costs are about $40 each.
