Board members and staff updated the Parks and Cemetery Board on sales and logistics for the Norton Veterans Memorial paver program during the Feb. 20 meeting.
Emma, Parks and Cemetery Board staff, said about 20 pavers had been purchased so far and that sales would continue through an April deadline; board members discussed a secondary deadline that extends into July. “They are continuing to come in. They will continue to come in until April. That is the deadline of when we want them by,” Emma said. Board discussion clarified that April 15 is a target date for the first deadline and that later orders will be accepted into July for a subsequent production run.
Members discussed overall capacity and the need for a possible second phase of commemorative recognition. Jamie Lukens told board members the memorial can accept a limited number of pavers of varying sizes; board members estimated the total capacity in different paver sizes would be roughly 180–190 units across all sizes. Several members raised that some veterans’ families want names included but may not purchase pavers; members suggested exploring additional stone or plaque options in a future phase.
Technical constraints for engraving also came up. The board noted a 16-characters-per-line limit for paver text; members discussed workarounds such as splitting names across lines or omitting middle initials for longer names.
The board set outreach and volunteer recruitment as priorities to meet the sales targets before production deadlines. Staff and volunteers will continue to promote paver purchases; staff said they will return with updated counts at future meetings.
