Board reauthorizes public-safety equipment under AB 41; adds new Lenco Bearcat to sheriff inventory

The Placer County Board of Supervisors approved on Tuesday the annual public-safety equipment reports and policies required by Assembly Bill 41 for the sheriff’s office, the probation department and the district attorney, and authorized the addition of a 2024 Lenco Bearcat armored vehicle to the sheriff’s AB 41 equipment list.
Captain Josh Channel presented the sheriff’s 2025 AB 41 report and requested board approval to add the 2024 Lenco Bearcat G3 — an armored four-door vehicle built on a commercial chassis and intended for high-risk public-safety operations — to the county’s list of approved equipment. Channel described the vehicle’s features and noted the department’s annual reporting commitment under the statute; the board approved the addition and received the 2025 annual report.
Probation presented its unmanned aerial system (drone) policy and annual report; staff said the department did not use its UAS for field operations in the past year but asked to retain that capability for future needs. The board approved the policy and annual report.
The District Attorney’s office presented an updated policy and annual report under AB 41 and asked the board to adopt the revisions; the board approved the DA’s request as well.
All three items were introduced as ordinances, read by title, and each report and policy was approved by the board during the meeting.
