UN reports mine contamination in Syria and expanded cross-border aid; WFP convoys reached northwest Syria

The UN briefed that humanitarian partners identified dozens of minefields and other explosive contamination in formerly contested areas of Syria and that food and aid imports have increased from Turkey and Jordan into northwest Syria.
The United Nations said Friday that humanitarian partners have identified 38 minefields and other areas contaminated with explosives in Idlib, Aleppo, Hama, Deir ez-Zor and Latakia, and that disposal teams have cleared and disposed of contamination in newly accessible areas.
The spokesperson said that since December more than 430 deaths and injuries from explosive remnants have been recorded, nearly a third involving children. Farmers and shepherds account for a significant portion of these casualties.
On cross-border aid, the briefing said 40 trucks carrying nearly 11,100 metric tons of World Food Programme (WFP) food aid crossed from Türkiye into northwest Syria through Bab al-Hawa over the weekend, enough, the spokesperson said, for an estimated 270,000 people. Partners have also increased imports of food and other assistance from Jordan since the start of 2025.
The spokesperson noted that mine-action work is scaling up as hostilities subside in parts of Syria and called for continued support for humanitarian operations in newly accessible areas.
