UN reports new displacement around Zamzam camp in North Darfur and readies peace-operations visits

The United Nations reported Friday that escalated fighting around Zamzam displacement camp in Al-Fashir, North Darfur, displaced about 5,500 people to Shamal Jabal Mara and contributed to a reported total of more than 20,000 newly displaced in that locality, according to the International Organization for Migration as cited by the UN spokesperson.
Aid agencies have provided food assistance for about 93,000 people and emergency shelter and supplies for roughly 53,000, the spokesperson said. The briefing added that some people seeking to leave the area have been prevented from doing so because of blocked routes amid intense fighting.
The UN also said Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, will visit Sudan, South Sudan and Abyei from Oct. 18 to 24 (dates reported in the briefing) to discuss cooperation on peacekeeping operations, support for local peace processes and evolving security dynamics. In Abyei he is scheduled to meet with the leadership of the mission, representatives of Abyei administrations, traditional leaders and civil-society groups including women’s and youth organizations.
The spokesperson said the humanitarian situation in Sudan remains ‘‘extremely worrying’’ and highlighted the ongoing need to protect civilians and ensure the safety and security of UN personnel.
