United Nations officials said Wednesday they are deeply concerned by renewed fighting near Zamzam displacement camp in North Darfur, where clashes over the past week forced roughly 5,500 people to seek safety in Shamal Jabal Mara and contributed to a larger displacement figure reported by U.N. partners.
The International Organization for Migration, cited by U.N. speakers, reported that newly displaced numbers in the Shamal Jabal Mara area have risen above 20,000. U.N. colleagues said aid agencies have been able to provide food assistance to about 93,000 people and emergency shelter and supplies to roughly 53,000 people in the affected areas.
The U.N. briefing stressed that in some areas civilians have been prevented from leaving because exit routes are blocked by fighting. The spokesperson said the situation remains extremely worrying and highlighted the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring access for humanitarian operations.
Separately, the U.N. Under‑Secretary‑General for Peace Operations is scheduled to visit Sudan and neighboring countries to discuss peacekeeping cooperation and operations in affected regions.
