District celebrates student-led Leadership Development Day attended by 250 students

June Flores, the district's director of equity, diversity and inclusion, told trustees that on Jan. 16 the district hosted 250 student leaders for a full-day program designed by leadership teachers and student input. Students helped create session content, chose words for a custom t-shirt design and co-presented many sessions with district staff. The sessions ranged across communication, marketing, time management, rally planning and community service; one session resulted in students making Valentine's Day cards to accompany Meals on Wheels deliveries.
Flores said the event aligned with the district's strategic plan by promoting equity, student voice and leadership development. Student post-surveys highlighted inclusivity and teamwork as major takeaways. Trustees praised the event; one board member said she had spoken with many participating children who reported positive outcomes.
Ending: The board acknowledged the work of students, staff and supporting departments — food services, transportation, maintenance and technology — and thanked the student leaders and volunteers for making the event possible.
