The Hawkeye Area Travel Council advisory board elected Laurie as board chair and Wendell as vice chair during its regular meeting Feb. 11 in Moab.
The board, meeting with Zach Perchevsky serving as vice chair and acting chair of the day, debated three nominations before voting. Sharon Kingsley moved to nominate Laurie as chair; Rebecca seconded the substitute motion. The board chair motion passed 5–0, as announced during the meeting. A subsequent motion by Howard to elect Wendell as vice chair carried with one recorded no vote (5–1).
Board members spoke for and against different nominees during a lengthy discussion. Supporters of Alex pointed to his recent work and continuity in the vice-chair role, while others emphasized Laurie’s experience and organizational skills. Alex acknowledged time constraints tied to an existing airport-board role and said he would resign from that seat if asked to serve as chair. Laurie and Alex both said they would support a collaborative executive committee.
The election followed a reading by a staff member of the board’s bylaws earlier in the meeting, which described the board’s duties and its role advising the county commission on use of TRT and TRCCA funds. Several members framed the leadership decision in light of those duties and the near-term work plan.
The board’s new chair and vice chair will assume duties immediately, including coordination with the travel council director on agendas and marketing direction, as described in the bylaws read earlier in the session.
The meeting then moved on to annual goals and marketing items.
