Summary
The Town of Westborough School Committee voted unanimously to appoint Matthew Mahler as assistant superintendent after a staff recommendation and positive feedback from staff and students; the appointment is contingent on successful contract negotiations.
At a brief meeting, the Town of Westborough School Committee voted 5-0 to appoint Matthew Mahler as assistant superintendent, the committee’s chair said, with the appointment contingent on successful contract negotiations.
Allison, a district staff member who presented the candidate, told the committee that Mahler was the top candidate from the interview round and that a site visit and staff feedback "confirmed he's going to be a great leader for our district." She summarized references praising his interpersonal skills, calmness under pressure, ability to analyze data to set improvement goals and a focus on keeping students at the center of decision-making.
Allison relayed feedback from a student forum that included one student’s written comment: "I think he is very passionate, positive, self motivated, dedicated, and problem solving," and added that the same student "didn't really have any" concerns when asked follow-up questions.
Before the vote, a committee member sought clarification about whether a formal vote was required. Allison responded, "By statute, there are a few positions that the school committee does vote to appoint" and explained that while the committee hires the superintendent, it votes to appoint an assistant superintendent.
Committee member Steve Duret moved to appoint Mahler; Allison seconded the motion. The Moderator conducted a roll-call vote. The record shows affirmative votes from Sham Sudin, Moscow, Durant and Mascu and a recorded unanimous result of 5-0, approving the appointment pending contract negotiations.
The committee then moved to adjourn and closed the brief session.
The appointment will not take effect until contract terms are finalized and any additional administrative steps required by the district are completed.
