Sharad Mehta, incoming president of the Westborough Rotary Club, and outgoing/current president Reyna Rego presented the club’s community-service work to the Economic Development Committee. Mehta said the club is a chapter of Rotary International and described a set of recurring local programs the club runs or supports.
Key programs include the summer farmers market at Bay State Commons (the club gives $5 "pop dollars" to elementary-school students), winter lights and a Santa event, an environmental action fair done with Sustainable Westborough, a fall regional EV show held at the Amazon parking lot to let owners discuss electric-vehicle ownership with residents, and a flexible-film plastics collection program that partners with Trex to trade recycled film for park benches (one bench per 1,000 pounds collected). The Rotary also provides five merit-based scholarships of $2,000 each, runs an Unsung Heroes awards program, supports the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (sending 10 students each year), organizes flag planting and a biannual repair cafe, and participates in international projects supplying medical equipment and reforestation work.
Mehta asked businesses and volunteers to help staff events and noted the club receives grants from Rotary International and local donations to fund projects. Committee members praised the Rotary’s partnerships with students, businesses and other towns and encouraged member participation in outreach and volunteer recruitment.
