Lifelong resident and organizer Dino Van described a proposed free Inkster Back-to-School Bash on Aug. 31 (1–7 p.m.) at the recreation center offering barbers, braiders, backpacks, school supplies and free food. "Everything that we're doing is gonna be free," he said, asking vendors to bring school supplies rather than charging fees.
Van also briefly described STEEP (Skilled Trade Enrollment Assistance Program), a trades-apprenticeship outreach program that places residents into skilled-trades jobs paying $30–$40 an hour, and said past events included Juneteenth celebrations that connected residents with resources.
Octavia Smith and other volunteers reported that the Inkster Task Force Farmers Market continues through the month, that the Chamber will restart small-business development classes (including an introductory AI workshop) and that community fundraisers such as comedy nights and pancake breakfasts are planned to support local nonprofits.
Why it matters: Local events and workforce programs both supply services (boots-on-the-ground youth programming, school supplies) and address longer-term employment pathways for residents. Organizers asked for city assistance with promotion and facilities.
