Library and community-center project estimates fall; pool bids due this week, AFC told

Committee members received updates on capital projects ahead of Town Meeting. The chair reported that the library article request had been reduced by about $102,000 after lower-than-expected moving bids and removal of a traffic study. "The good news is the article as of last night was down a 102,000 in requests," the chair said, noting bids for moving and other soft costs came in below earlier estimates.
Building-committee work continues: members said temporary-facility costs (about $337,000 in the current estimate) and owner contingency calculations could change after additional information from vendors and safety reviewers. The committee discussed that if a capital article fails at Town Meeting the town would have to decide whether to request transfers for emergency repairs or pursue scaled-back options.
On the pool, Speaker 8 reported that the recreation committee met and expects actual bids for salt- and chlorine-based pool systems on Monday; an architect's preliminary estimate of about $406,000 will be reviewed and possibly revised once competitive bids arrive. A private pool owner in the audience raised questions suggesting potential for lower costs; the Building Committee will evaluate the incoming estimates before any changes to the AFC recommendation.
Committee members agreed to wait for the updated figures and said they would present any revised recommendation at Town Meeting if warranted.
